Anleitung/Kommentar
It is highly recommended that, on your first playthrough, you select a lower difficulty level like Beginner. To do this, answer No when the game asks if you want to play Standard Game. Selecting more than five rooms per level will result in the game automatically switching to text-mode graphics.

Spielbeschreibung
Beneath Apple Manor is a very early graphical top-down dungeon crawling game that originally came out in 1978 for the Apple II computers and was then ported to other systems. It is comparable to Rogue and other roguelike games, in that the player controls a lone adventurer exploring a multi-level dungeon in search of a fabled artifact, which, in this case, is a golden apple. Similar to roguelikes, all levels are procedurally generated. However, Beneath Apple Manor uses somewhat different playing mechanics and has less features than Rogue.
The player character has four attributes: Strength, Intelligence, Dexterity and Body. Unlike other role-playing games, each of these are actually spent on different actions, and the player's "stats" determine the maximum amount of points available for each attribute at any given time. Thus, Dexterity points are spent when moving and running, Strength on attacks and bashing doors, and Intelligence on casting spells and healing, while Body points are essentially hit points. Resting replenishes all attribute points, except for Body which needs to be healed manually by using Intelligence points. Additionally, the player character may not be able to move at all when carrying too much gold without sufficient Strength.
Slaying monsters allows the player to accumulate experience points, which can be used at any time to increase the maximum attribute points at the rate of 10 experience points for 1 extra attribute point. To do this, you need to return to the "main staircase" that connects all levels of the dungeon, and use the "trade" option. From here, you can also buy weapons and armour for gold found in the dungeon, and save the game by using the "scan" option that also costs in-game gold. However, better weapons, armour and magic items can only be found in chests that are hidden in dungeon rooms.
Unlike Rogue and similar games, there is no actual player inventory in Beneath Apple Manor. Weapons, armour and magical items like potions and wands, which are sometimes found in chests, are equipped or used immediately and serve and permanent powerups (or, in some cases, power-downs) and cannot be dropped or stored for later use.
Beneath Apple Manor was originally released commercially, but now the full version can be downloaded from the author's website.
