Spielbeschreibung
Dungeons of Noudar 3D is a first-person, turn-based dungeon crawler that is a graphical representation of Dungeons of Noudar, an experimental "rogue-lite" by the same author. The fantasy plot with vaguely religious themes sends the player as some sort of holy crusader into a citadel ridden with evil, and seemingly populated by dark elves (all graphics have been borrowed from Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup).
With all these roguelike links, the game is fairly straightforward. To fight, you simply use the currently equipped item while facing the enemy, and walking in close proximity will cause the player to take damage. Interestingly, here, instead of hit points you have "faith" which is gradually lost when under attack, and replenished by picking "holy health" amulets, which increase the player's faith by 20 points to what seems like an unlimited amount, which is the closest thing to levelling up in this game (since the author calls it an RPG).
More complex RPG or roguelike mechanics like hunger, thirst or resting, or various items such as magic scrolls, potions or wands are apparently not present. The levels are not randomly generated either, like in the original Dungeons of Noudar. You will occasionally run into oddly looking switches that you need to hit with the sword to open doors elsewhere, but other than that, the game feels rather minimalistic. There is no save or load game feature, but with some patience you should be able to complete it in less than an hour, at least that's what the official site says.
Dungeons of Noudar 3D can be viewed as a technical feat of sorts, having been programmed in 2018 and being able to run on an authentic 386 if one so desires. The pseudo-3D renderer is quite impressive, especially considering that the underlying architecture is in some ways simpler than even Wolfenstein 3-D. The game can also serve as a nice distraction or a coffee break rogue-lite.
Dungeons of Noudar 3D was released as freeware along with its source code. It is now part of the FreeDOS bundle too.
