Spielbeschreibung
Absence is a first-person shooter game that runs on a heavily modified Wolfenstein 3D engine. It can be described as a mixture of System Shock, Corrridor 7 and Operation Body Count with some Resident Evil vibes thrown in.
The game takes place in a secret underground laboratory called the Sigma Complex that conducted research on robotics and genetics for the government. It appears that a major accident has happened and all contact with the complex is lost. The military sends a single elite agent, Chase Richards, to infiltrate the facility and make sure the incident remains contained, by retrieving all important research data and neutralising any failed experiments that may be on the loose.
Obviously, the player is going to encounter various hostile forces along the way, such as rampant robots, mutants and zombies, but Absence's modified engine allows for many other features that make it stand apart from the bulk of Wolfenstein 3D mods. The most notable addition are player upgrades: throughout the labs, implants are found which can be used at special stations to increase player stats, that is Endurance, Strength and Accuracy. New items include portable medikits that can be used whenever the need arises, and pickups that are taken not from the floor, but off shelves or tables. Scattered across levels are multiple logs and diaries that contain important bits of information, and there are computer terminals that require passwords to perform certain functions like turn off security systems.
The game features semi-realistic level design that might remind you of Operation Body Count (but expect to visit quite a few identical rooms that hold nothing of particular interest), and also offers the usual improvements over the basic Wolfenstein 3D engine in the form of textured floors and ceilings, diminished lighting and so on.
Absence was originally released for DOS, but then ported to Windows based on the code of Wolf4SDL. The source code is also available.
